Today, the team at Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation program is pleased to announce a new partnership in which we will bring the music of the world to the streets of the United States.

Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation will partner with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to bring more than 50 international musicians between the ages of 19-35 to the United States for a month-long exchange. OneBeat musicians will connect with Americans musicians and audiences, especially underserved youth, through people-to-people diplomacy and social engagement projects. It is slated to kick-off in the United States in September of 2012.

OneBeat builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy. It embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools, including music, to bring people, especially youth, together for greater understanding.

Partnering with the team at Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, these musicians will perform in ensembles that improvise across genres, reinvent traditional tunes, compose original work, record in the state-of-the-art OneBeat mobile studio, and prepare for performances and educational workshops. The groups will then tour throughout the United States and perform the music they have developed during the exchange, work with local musicians, and conduct social outreach workshops with local youth.

LUCERNE STREET STUDIO

Day 2

In August and September 2011 Found Sound Nation ran a Street Studio project at the renowned Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. As part of the Spotlight program of the Lucerne Festival Academy, Found Sound Nation set up small mobile recording studios to link festival musicians with Lucerne residents and visitors, as they worked together in the creation of new works. The street studios were based at various locations surrounding the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern (KKL), and these tracks were created on the spot with material gathered from people on the streets of Lucerne. The videos, made by Temujin Doran, are quick looks at each of our four days at the Street Studio. Also, all of the music created at the street studios can be freely downloaded by clicking on the links below.

Found Sound Nation with the Lucerne Festival, 2011

Lucerne

For the next three weeks, Found Sound Nation is leading a series of projects in collaboration with the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland. This week’s project: a music-writing workshop (using found sounds and audio technology) at a school in Nebikon for students with behavioral and social challenges.

Tomorrow, we’ll host a party at the “Bouvette,” which will include a presentation of our work with the boys, and live mixing of sounds created by the people who stop by the party.

As part of the Spotlight program of the Lucerne Festival Academy, Found Sound Nation will continue over the next two weeks with a street studio project, in which anyone can come off the streets of Lucerne to record and mix sounds in our mobile street studio. The sounds will be posted to our site periodically as we mix everything together.
